Pizhichil

Pizhichil (literally meaning squeezing) is a unique Ayurvedic therapy from Kerala. In this treatment, a special linen cloth is dipped into warm kuzhambu (medicated oil mixture), and squeezed over the disease-affected areas or the whole body of the patient. While simultaneously massaging those areas, care is taken to ensure no portion is missed out. Pizhichil is only done after preparing the body using Abhyangam. Pizhichil is only done as a full course of minimum 3 days or above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pizhichil used for?

Pizhichil is a rejuvenating Ayurvedic therapy used to treat joint pain, neurological conditions, fatigue, and muscular disorders. It combines gentle oil massage with warm medicated oil being continuously squeezed over the body.

How does the therapy work?

Warm kuzhambu (medicated oil mixture) is absorbed through the skin as it’s squeezed over the affected areas. The simultaneous massage and warmth soothe the nervous system, reduce stiffness, and stimulate circulation throughout the body.

Why is a minimum of 3 days required?

Pizhichil works through cumulative healing. The minimum 3-day protocol ensures the body receives enough oil saturation and therapeutic stimulation to support meaningful tissue repair and nervous system recovery.

Who benefits most from Pizhichil?

This therapy is especially beneficial for:

  • Arthritis, joint pain, and stiffness
  • Neurological conditions like paralysis or muscle weakness
  • Fatigue, rheumatism, or general body degeneration
How is the body prepared beforehand?

The session always begins with Abhyangam (traditional oil massage) to activate the body and improve absorption of the kuzhambu. This preparation is crucial for effectiveness and safety.
